Circle CCTP (Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol)

CCTP is Circle's native burn-and-mint bridge for USDC across supported chains. Unlike lock-and-release bridges, CCTP burns USDC on the source chain and mints new canonical USDC on the destination — no wrapped tokens, no bridge risk.

On-Ramp / Off-Ramp Flows

Merchants accepting stablecoins typically use a fiat-to-crypto gateway (on-ramp for customer payments) or convert crypto to fiat at settlement (off-ramp).

Customer on-ramp

1. Customer buys stablecoin
Via exchange (Coinbase, Kraken), P2P, or embedded on-ramp widget (MoonPay, Stripe Crypto, Transak).
2. Transfer to merchant
Customer sends USDC/USDT to merchant's address — QR code or Solana Pay / EIP-681 URI.
3. Merchant confirms
Blockchain confirmation arrives. For stablecoins on fast chains (Solana, L2), this is near-instant.

Merchant off-ramp

1. Merchant holds stablecoins
USDC/USDT accumulates in merchant wallet or smart contract.
2. Off-ramp provider
Circle (USDC direct redemption), Coinbase, Bridge.xyz, or local partner converts on-chain to fiat wire.
3. Fiat credited
USD/EUR credited to merchant's bank account. Typical SLA: same-day to T+1.
Regulatory note: Stablecoin issuance is subject to evolving regulation. The EU MiCA framework (2024) requires stablecoin issuers to hold reserves and obtain an EMI license. In the US, the GENIUS Act and STABLE Act proposals would establish federal licensing requirements. Treatment varies significantly by jurisdiction.
