What does POS entry mode 05 mean?
Contact chip read. The card was inserted and the transaction was processed with the EMV chip. The authorization carries the chip data in DE 55, including the ARQC cryptogram.

What it means for the transaction
- The issuer can validate the ARQC and the iCVV/CVC on the chip track-2 equivalent data — the strongest card-present authentication.
- Counterfeit-fraud liability stays with the issuer when the chip transaction was processed correctly.
- Commonly sent as 051 (terminal accepts PIN) or 052 (terminal cannot accept PIN).
How 05 appears in DE 22
In ISO 8583 field 22 the first two digits are the PAN entry mode and the third is the terminal's PIN entry capability. EMV tag 9F39 carries only the two-digit entry mode.
