What does POS entry mode 01 mean?

Manual key entry. The card number was typed in — at a terminal, a virtual terminal, or by a call-centre agent for a mail or telephone order (MOTO).

What it means for the transaction

  • No track or chip data, so there is no CVV1/iCVV or cryptogram to check; CVV2/CVC2 and address verification are the main checks.
  • Keyed card-present transactions carry more fraud risk and usually a higher interchange rate than chip or contactless.
  • If a chip card failed and the PAN was keyed instead, Mastercard expects 79 (fallback) rather than 01.

How 01 appears in DE 22

In ISO 8583 field 22 the first two digits are the PAN entry mode and the third is the terminal's PIN entry capability. EMV tag 9F39 carries only the two-digit entry mode.
